Ghostbusters Shall Not Die
A lot of us 80s kids love Ghostbusters on a level that can’t be described. When I was young, it was a cool ghost story; now that I’m older, it’s a hilarious comedy, quotable at the same level as Monty Python (”What did you do, Ray?” still remains a favorite used at least once a week in this household.) So in November last year, when the news broke in full glory that Dan Aykroyd would be developing a new Ghostbusters game, 80s nerds like myself just flipped with joy.
And then in July, Activision Blizzard said “Sorry, we’re not going to produce that game after all.” Horror and nerdrage ensued.
Now Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, has revealed that the reason that Ghostbusters (along with a few other games) were dropped is because they weren’t multi-million dollar franchise games: that is, they weren’t exploitable for sequels and merchandise (source.) Well, now we know Activision-Blizzard’s publishing philosophy, if it wasn’t already clear after the Starcraft 2 announcement at Blizzcon.
Thankfully, Atari has rescued the title from oblivion. We should expect to see the title in 2009.
So go check out the official site, and expect the game to be something to remember.
