WoW 3.0.8: The Aftermath

Published by jskelton under 1 Edit This

Yesterday, Blizzard installed the 3.0.8 patch to World of Warcraft. And, as anyone could have expected, post-patch aggression set in rather quickly. Things that were supposed to be fixed, weren’t; changes that were supposed to take place, didn’t; and many things which should have worked fine, broken. Although Blizzard only took down the majority of servers for an additional 2 hours of extended maintenance, and limited most servers to a rolling restart in the early morning, Wrath of the Lich King players were finding things, well, unplayable.

Eyonix has kept the community up to date on the latest and major issues of the patch.

Blizzard attempted to make a great change to the Arena system to provide for better matchups:

With the release of patch 3.0.8 we have implemented a new matchmaking system for arenas that will improve the overall system and help ensure that players will be matched against others of equal skill. The new matchmaking system uses a rating that you cannot see, and is separate for each of the arena brackets.

The rating changes at the end of each match are affected by this new system, and as it just came out, there may initially be some odd behavior in rating changes, but these will straighten out fairly quickly.

Unsurprisingly, arena matches were later disabled, as they need to finish tweaking the system to prevent odd exploits and rating gain.

What really tweaked the realms though was Wintergrasp. With all the amazing changes they did to Wintergrasp - plus the new purchasable items - everyone rushed to the server’s first Wintergrasp game. It was amazing, awesome, and ended with woops and hollars.

And then the Northrend server crashed.

People rushed back on, to find Wintergrasp reset, and fighting once again for control. Sure, fine, whatever! Wintergrasp comes to an end, and - the Northrend server crashes.

So it continued, a seemingly endless cycle of mark and honor farming in Wintergrasp, and Northrend server crashing outside. The forums were full of “the server is crashing” and “please shut down Wintergrasp” posts. Finally, after hours of fussing with it, they finally disable Wintergrasp across the realms. No word yet on whether or not they’ll roll back any marks, honor, or purchases, although they sound disinclined.

Also, the promised ability to create a DK on any server, given that you had a 55+ character on one, had faulty implementation.

It was anticipated that with the release of the current patch, 3.0.8, players would be able to create a new death knight on any realm within their region. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, we are not able to make this available as of yet. We do anticipate making this available in the near future and will do our best to keep everyone informed of when this becomes available.

Please keep in mind that when implemented restrictions will still apply to new, non-transfer realms such that death knights cannot be created on those realms until you level a character to level 55 on that realm or until transfer restrictions are removed.

If you have any further questions on creating a death knight, please see the FAQ.

Not to mention bugged bosses, abilities, and everything else, Blizzard had a very rocky start to this patch. I’ll give them credit for not taking down the servers for two days, but still, there’s a lot of disappointment on the quality control this time around. Hopefully it’ll all be “patched” up soon.
